The Hydraulically Actuated Casing Scraper is designed for mechanical cleaningof casing internal walls during drilling, workover,or gas storage well operations.
The tool is used to removecement sheath residues, drilling mud, rust, scale, and other deposits from the casing ID to ensure proper conditions for subsequent downhole operations.
The scraper utilizes hydraulic activation to extend and retract the scraper blades. Once activated, the blades maintaincontact with the casing inner wall and perform cleaning through axial reciprocating movement under normal circulation conditions.
Working Principle
The casingscraper is hydraulically actuated by circulation pressure.
Blade expansionand retraction are fully controlled by hydraulic pressure without mechanical intervention.
1. Run-in-hole (RIH)
The tool is run into the well in the closed position with scraper blades fully retracted.
In this configuration, the reduced outer diameter ensures smooth passage through the casing ID.
2. Hydraulic Blade Activation
After reaching the target depth:
- Circulation is established.
- Pump rate and pressureare gradually increased.
- When the circulation pressure reaches the predefined activation threshold, the internal hydraulic piston is actuated.
- The piston moves axially, forcingthe scraper bladesoutward into contactwith the casing inner wall.
- Once expanded, the tool entersscraping mode.
3. Scraping Operation
Scraping is performed under controlled circulation conditions.
- The scraper bladesremain expanded as long as circulation pressureis maintained above the activation pressure.
- Axial reciprocating movement(up-and-down motion) enableseffective removal of cement, scale, rust, and debris.
- Blade contact force is hydraulically maintained to ensurestable and uniformcleaning.
4. Blade Retraction
- When pump pressureis reduced below the activation threshold or circulation is stopped, hydraulic force decreases.
- The internal return mechanism retracts the scraperblades automatically.
- The tool returns to its closedconfiguration for safe retrieval.

Hydraulic pressure activation
The scraper blades are activated directly by circulation pressure, without ball-drop operation. This simplifies the operating procedure and reduces the risk of ball seating failure or incorrect activation.
Automatic blade retraction
When pump pressure is reduced or circulation is stopped, the scraper blades retract back into the tool body, allowing safer retrieval and reducing the risk of getting stuck.
