High-Temperature, High-Torque Power Section for Demanding Downhole Applications
The TORRENT All-Metal Motor Power Section is engineered for drilling and intervention operations where conventional elastomer-based power sections are limited by high temperatures, aggressive fluids or demanding operating conditions.
Unlike a conventional positive displacement motor power section, which consists of a metal rotor and an elastomer-lined stator, the TORRENT design uses an all-metal rotor and stator assembly with no elastomeric lining. This construction provides excellent thermal stability, chemical resistance and torque output while maintaining a compact overall length.
Standard configurations are suitable for temperatures up to 300°C. Special high-temperature configurations can be engineered for service up to 400°C, subject to model selection and application review.
The All-Metal Motor Power Section can be integrated into downhole drilling motors and other tools requiring rotary power, including hydraulic agitators and specialized coiled-tubing intervention tools.
Fluid Compatibility
The all-metal design provides strong resistance to thermal degradation, swelling and chemical attack commonly experienced by elastomer stators. It is suitable for use with:
- Oil-based drilling mud
- Water-based drilling mud
- Acidic fluids
- Nitrogen and aerated fluids
- High-chloride brines
- Hydrocarbon and industrial solvents
- Other fluids incompatible with conventional elastomers
Recommended Solids Control
The power section can operate under a broad range of downhole conditions and fluid systems. For improved service life, TORRENT recommends maintaining the sand content of the circulating fluid below 0.5%.
When operating in a properly conditioned mud system with sand content below 0.2%, the expected operating life is at least 300 hours under suitable operating conditions. Actual service life depends on the fluid properties, solids size and concentration, operating differential pressure, rotational speed and overall downhole environment.
